Tragedy struck Croatia on Monday in one of the rare occurrences of gun violence in the Balkan nation, as a gunman opened fire in a nursing home, resulting in the deaths of no less than five people. The official media of the State reported this.
According to state broadcaster HRT, an unidentified shooter entered a Daruvar nursing home and started shooting after traveling about 130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Zagreb.
According to HRT, the gunshots resulted in at least five deaths and numerous injuries.
The source said that the accused suspect was apprehended by authorities after running away.
The said gunman was a “war veteran,” according to the Croatian daily Jutarnji list, who murdered his mother and several other residents and employees.
Croatia fought a war of independence during the breakup of Yugoslavia from 1991 to 1995.
