Mexico has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the country, ending months of uncertainty over his diplomatic posting and clearing a major hurdle in the process.
Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, saying the Mexican Embassy in Abuja had delivered the diplomatic document confirming the Mexican government’s acceptance of his appointment.
The approval, known as agrément, was presented by José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a post on X, Omokri expressed gratitude for the approval and confirmed that his diplomatic responsibilities would extend beyond Mexico to three Central American countries.
“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua,” he wrote.
The development means Omokri has received the Mexican government’s consent to represent Nigeria in Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
However, the completion of the remaining diplomatic formalities and the date he will formally assume duty have not been specified in the information available.
Tinubu Nominated Omokri in 2025
Omokri’s appointment followed President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of him for an ambassadorial position in November 2025 as part of a wider list of diplomatic nominees.
The list also included former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.
The nominations formed part of the Federal Government’s efforts to fill diplomatic positions and strengthen Nigeria’s representation in foreign missions.
The Senate subsequently confirmed Omokri and other nominees in December 2025, clearing the legislative stage of the appointment process.
However, Senate confirmation alone could not complete his deployment because the receiving country’s consent was still required.
Under established diplomatic practice, a government seeking to appoint an ambassador must obtain the receiving country’s agrément before proceeding with the appointment in accordance with applicable diplomatic procedures.
Mexico Posting Remained Pending After March Approval
On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved the postings of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City.
Despite the approval of the postings by the Nigerian government, Omokri’s deployment remained pending because Mexico had not yet communicated its formal acceptance.
The delay generated public discussion about the status of his appointment, particularly as the government moved to implement other ambassadorial postings.
In August 2026, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reportedly disclosed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries that had yet to communicate formal acceptance in connection with two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.
The ministry said it was engaging the countries concerned and expressed confidence that the necessary approvals would be secured.
Mexico’s latest decision therefore removes a key diplomatic obstacle that had prevented Omokri’s posting from advancing to its next stage.
Omokri Had Denied Reports of Rejection
Before the approval was announced, Omokri had rejected suggestions that Mexico had turned down his appointment.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Today programme in June, he attributed the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico co-hosted with the United States and Canada.
His comments came amid public speculation over the prolonged wait for confirmation from the Mexican government.
The granting of agrément now establishes Mexico’s consent to receive Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador, although the precise timeline for his assumption of duty remains unclear.
What Omokri’s Appointment Means for Nigeria’s Relations With Central America
In addition to his primary posting in Mexico, Omokri will have concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Concurrent accreditation allows a diplomat based in one country to represent the sending country in additional countries, subject to the relevant diplomatic arrangements. It enables governments to maintain diplomatic representation across multiple countries without necessarily establishing a separate resident ambassadorial mission in each one.
In his role, Omokri is expected to represent Nigeria’s interests, engage the host governments, promote bilateral cooperation and support opportunities for trade, investment, education and cultural exchange.
His responsibilities will also include advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and helping strengthen relations with the four countries covered by his accreditation.
The diplomatic posting comes as the Federal Government seeks to fill ambassadorial positions and maintain Nigeria’s engagement with foreign governments.
Who Is Reno Omokri?
Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and later became widely known for his commentary on Nigerian politics, public policy and national affairs.
He has remained an active participant in political debates, frequently expressing views on government policies and the activities of political figures.
His appointment as ambassador attracted public attention because of his profile in Nigeria’s political discourse.
With Mexico’s approval now secured, Omokri has cleared a major stage of the appointment process. The remaining steps will determine when he formally assumes his diplomatic responsibilities in Mexico and begins representing Nigeria in the country and the three additional states under his concurrent accreditation.
