FAAN Heightens Airport Surveillance Nationwide After Ebola Case Confirmed in Abuja

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced heightened surveillance across airports nationwide following reports of a confirmed Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as health authorities intensify efforts to contain the infection and trace individuals who may have been exposed.

The authority said it was strengthening vigilance across airport operations in coordination with public health and aviation regulatory agencies to minimise the risk of further transmission and protect passengers, aviation workers and other airport users.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, in Lagos.

According to FAAN, the enhanced surveillance measures form part of broader public health containment efforts following the confirmation of the case in Abuja.

The authority said airport operations would continue to be guided by recommendations from the relevant public health agencies as officials assess the situation and determine whether additional preventive measures are required.

FAAN Coordinates With NCDC, Port Health Services

FAAN disclosed that it was working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Port Health Services, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant agencies to support the national response.

The collaboration is intended to strengthen surveillance, facilitate the implementation of public health protocols and ensure that any necessary interventions at airports are coordinated with the agencies responsible for disease prevention and control.

The authority also highlighted the importance of early identification, prompt reporting and contact tracing in limiting the potential spread of infectious diseases.

It said the early identification of the confirmed case and the commencement of contact tracing underscored the importance of established public health procedures and effective coordination among government agencies.

FAAN reaffirmed its readiness to introduce additional preventive measures if advised by the relevant authorities, stressing that the safety of passengers, aviation personnel and the wider public remained a priority.

The authority did not specify in the statement whether the latest announcement involved the introduction of new passenger-screening requirements, travel restrictions or changes to airport operations.

It urged airlines, passengers, airport users and other stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate with health officials carrying out their duties.

FAAN also advised members of the public to obtain information from verified government sources and avoid circulating unconfirmed reports that could cause unnecessary alarm.

Abuja Case Prompts Contact-Tracing Efforts

The heightened airport surveillance follows reports published on October 20, 2026, that the Federal Government had confirmed an imported Ebola case in Abuja involving a woman who had recently arrived from Uganda.

According to the cited report by Nairametrics, the patient had been isolated, while 44 contacts had been identified for tracing and monitoring.

The reported case has raised the importance of coordinated surveillance at airports and other entry points, particularly where travellers may have been exposed to an infectious disease before their arrival in Nigeria.

Contact tracing involves identifying people who may have had contact with an infected person, assessing their potential exposure and monitoring them in accordance with public health guidance. The process helps health authorities identify possible secondary cases and take timely action to limit further transmission.

The reported identification of contacts does not, by itself, mean that those individuals are infected. Their risk depends on the nature and timing of their exposure, which health officials must assess.

Further information about the patient’s condition, the circumstances of the reported exposure and the outcome of the contact-tracing exercise should be confirmed through official updates from the NCDC and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Nigeria Had Earlier Strengthened Ebola Preparedness

Nigeria had reportedly begun strengthening its Ebola preparedness measures months before the latest confirmation.

A Nairametrics report published on May 20, 2026, said FAAN had activated enhanced Ebola-response protocols at international airports nationwide. The reported measures included increased monitoring of passengers arriving from high-risk countries and procedures for isolating suspected cases.

A subsequent Nairametrics report published on June 10, 2026, said President Bola Tinubu had approved N10 billion in emergency funding for Ebola preparedness and established a Presidential Task Force to coordinate the response.

The report said the measures included intensified passenger screening, the activation of isolation facilities at Lagos and Abuja airports, and health declarations for travellers arriving from designated high-risk countries.

These earlier reported preparations provide context for FAAN’s latest announcement, although the precise operational measures currently in force should be confirmed through official government statements.

The effectiveness of such measures depends on timely information-sharing among health authorities, airport operators, airlines and other agencies, alongside appropriate screening, referral and isolation procedures where indicated.

What Ebola Means for Travellers and Airport Users

Ebola Virus Disease is a severe illness caused by viruses in the Orthoebolavirus genus. It can cause fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in some cases, internal or external bleeding. Early symptoms can resemble those of other illnesses, making medical assessment important when exposure is suspected.

Ebola is primarily transmitted through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is symptomatic, or with contaminated objects and materials. It is not generally spread through the air in the manner of measles.

The World Health Organization advises that people who suspect they may have been exposed should seek prompt guidance from health professionals and avoid direct contact with others while awaiting assessment.

For travellers, the current priority is to follow instructions issued by airport health personnel, provide accurate information when requested and comply with any screening or monitoring procedures directed by public health authorities.

Passengers should not assume that every traveller arriving from an affected country is infected. Exposure assessment and appropriate medical evaluation are necessary to determine the level of risk.

Public Urged to Rely on Official Updates

FAAN’s announcement places airport surveillance among the measures supporting Nigeria’s wider response to the reported case.

The authority has called on passengers, airlines and airport users to cooperate with relevant officials while avoiding the spread of unverified information.

As the response continues, updates from the NCDC, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Port Health Services and other authorised agencies will be important in establishing the latest information about the patient’s condition, the progress of contact tracing and any additional measures required at airports.

FAAN’s statement did not announce a nationwide airport shutdown or confirm new travel restrictions. Travellers should therefore check official advisories for any changes to screening procedures or entry requirements before travelling.

The immediate public health priorities remain identifying potential exposures, monitoring contacts, coordinating the response across agencies and communicating verified information to the public.
