Reps Seek Stronger Nigeria-US Economic Ties as US Chamber of Commerce President Meets Abbas

The House of Representatives is seeking to strengthen parliamentary relations between Nigeria and the United States and expand economic cooperation as President of the US Chamber of Commerce, Suzanne P. Clark, prepares to meet the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.

The planned meeting, scheduled for Monday, is expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on investment opportunities, bilateral engagement and stronger collaboration between Nigeria’s legislature and the American business community.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria-USA Parliamentary Relations, Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, disclosed Clark’s planned visit during a meeting, highlighting the National Assembly’s efforts to deepen relations between both countries through parliamentary diplomacy and economic engagement.

The proposed engagement is expected to explore areas where closer institutional relations and private-sector partnerships could promote trade, attract investment and support economic development in Nigeria and the United States.

Although the specific investment sectors to be discussed were not disclosed, the meeting is expected to provide a platform for identifying shared economic interests and opportunities for cooperation.

House Committee Pushes Parliamentary Diplomacy

Onuakalusi, who also chairs the Nigeria-United States Parliamentary Friendship Group in the House, has pursued engagements with American lawmakers, policy institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen bilateral relations.

The parliamentary friendship group seeks to use legislative diplomacy to promote dialogue, improve mutual understanding and encourage cooperation on issues of shared interest.

In May 2025, Onuakalusi participated in a House delegation’s visit to the United States for discussions aimed at improving parliamentary collaboration and governance.

The delegation held engagements with members of the US Congress and the Heritage Foundation, where discussions covered public policy, education, inflation, border security and electoral integrity.

Such engagements provide opportunities for Nigerian lawmakers to exchange ideas with their American counterparts and explore policy approaches that could support institutional development and cooperation.

The planned meeting between Clark and Abbas would extend these efforts by bringing the leadership of the House of Representatives into direct engagement with a prominent representative of the American business community.

Investment and Trade in Focus

Clark’s anticipated visit comes as Nigeria continues to seek foreign investment, expand commercial partnerships and strengthen its economic relationship with major international partners.

The US Chamber of Commerce represents businesses across a wide range of industries and advocates policies aimed at supporting commerce, investment and economic growth.

Engagement with the organisation could provide Nigerian lawmakers with an opportunity to discuss the concerns of American businesses considering investment in Nigeria, as well as measures that could improve the country’s attractiveness to foreign investors.

Potential areas for dialogue include the business environment, regulatory predictability, infrastructure, trade facilitation and opportunities for private-sector partnerships. However, the information provided does not confirm that these specific issues have been placed on the official agenda for the meeting.

For Nigeria, stronger commercial engagement with American businesses could support capital inflows, job creation, technology transfer and access to international markets, depending on the investments secured and the terms of individual partnerships.

The meeting could also help identify obstacles facing businesses operating across both markets and encourage further dialogue between policymakers and investors.

Lawmakers Seek Diplomatic Engagement on Bilateral Issues

Beyond economic cooperation, the Nigeria-United States Parliamentary Friendship Group has advocated diplomatic engagement on issues affecting relations between the two countries.

Following the US decision to review visa privileges for Nigerian citizens, the group supported efforts to engage American authorities over the matter.

The initiative reflected the lawmakers’ position that sustained dialogue and diplomatic channels could help address disagreements and reduce the risk of bilateral issues undermining wider cooperation.

The group has also announced plans for an economic and investment summit intended to bring together policymakers, investors and other stakeholders to explore opportunities for trade and investment between Nigeria and the United States.

The proposed summit would complement parliamentary diplomacy by creating a platform for discussions involving government officials and private-sector representatives.

However, further details on the summit’s timing, participating organisations and specific investment objectives were not included in the information available.

Abbas Meeting Expected to Deepen Institutional Ties

The planned meeting between Clark and Abbas is expected to provide another opportunity to strengthen relations between Nigeria’s legislature and American business interests.

While parliamentary diplomacy is conducted through legislative engagement rather than formal executive negotiations, it can support wider bilateral relations by encouraging dialogue, sharing policy perspectives and identifying areas for cooperation.

The House of Representatives has continued to pursue such engagements as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s international partnerships and promote economic opportunities.

Details of any agreements, investment commitments or specific initiatives expected to emerge from Clark’s meeting with Abbas have not yet been provided.

The outcome of the engagement will therefore be important in determining whether the planned discussions translate into concrete measures to expand trade, encourage investment and deepen Nigeria-US economic cooperation.
