Uganda Denies Active Ebola Cases, Says Nigerian Patient Travelled Through Country From DR Congo

Uganda has clarified that it had no confirmed active Ebola cases as of October 20, 2026, following Nigeria’s announcement of an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, involving a woman who recently travelled from the East African country.

Ugandan health authorities said the woman was a Nigerian national who had travelled to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) for business before transiting through Uganda on her journey to Nigeria.

The clarification came after Nigeria’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, announced that laboratory tests had confirmed an Ebola infection in a woman who recently arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda.

In a statement, Pate said the patient had been admitted to a private hospital in the FCT, where she received treatment for several days before the diagnosis was confirmed. He added that she had been isolated and was receiving medical care.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria confirms one case of Ebola disease in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following laboratory confirmation today, 20 October 2026,” Pate said.

He urged public and private healthcare facilities nationwide to remain vigilant, identify suspected cases promptly, isolate patients where necessary and report suspected infections to public health authorities without delay.

“Investigations are ongoing, and we will continue to provide accurate and timely information,” the minister added.

Uganda Says Patient Travelled From DR Congo

Following Nigeria’s announcement, Uganda’s Director-General of Health Services, Charles Olaro, issued a clarification stating that the patient had travelled to eastern DR Congo for business before passing through Uganda in early October.

According to Olaro, the woman did not exhibit symptoms while she was in Uganda but developed symptoms after arriving in Nigeria.

Ugandan authorities said the fact that she travelled through their country did not establish that she contracted the virus there.

“Travel through Uganda does not establish that infection occurred here. The location of exposure remains under investigation,” the Ugandan health ministry said.

The ministry added that Nigeria had yet to provide detailed information about the woman’s travel itinerary and clinical history that could help investigators establish where she might have been exposed and identify people who may require contact tracing.

It also emphasised that Uganda had no confirmed active Ebola cases at the time of its statement.

The clarification is significant because the initial announcement that the patient had arrived from Uganda prompted concerns about the possibility of an outbreak in the East African country.

However, the available information does not establish where the woman contracted the virus. Her travel through Uganda alone is not evidence that transmission occurred there.

Uganda to Strengthen Screening at Points of Entry

Despite denying the presence of confirmed active cases, the Ugandan government said it would strengthen screening and public health controls at its points of entry.

The country also said it had maintained limited arrangements for humanitarian and diplomatic movement.

The proposed measures are intended to support early detection and reduce the risk of undetected infections crossing borders while investigations continue.

The situation has also highlighted the importance of information-sharing between countries when suspected or confirmed infectious diseases involve international travel.

Health authorities in Nigeria and Uganda will need accurate travel histories, clinical information and contact-tracing data to determine where exposure may have occurred and whether additional public health interventions are necessary.

Nigeria Places Healthcare Facilities on Alert

Following confirmation of the case, Pate called on healthcare facilities across Nigeria to strengthen their preparedness and maintain a high level of suspicion for possible Ebola infections.

He urged healthcare workers to promptly identify and isolate suspected cases, observe strict infection prevention and control procedures, and immediately notify the appropriate public health authorities.

The minister said investigations were continuing and that the Federal Government would provide further information as it became available.

The case has raised concerns because Nigeria previously experienced an Ebola outbreak in 2014 after the arrival of Liberian-American diplomat Patrick Sawyer, who was infected with the virus.

Sawyer travelled to Lagos in July 2014 and was subsequently diagnosed with Ebola. The outbreak triggered an emergency public health response involving contact tracing, isolation and monitoring of exposed individuals.

Nigeria eventually contained that outbreak, which the World Health Organization declared over in October 2014.

The previous experience underscores the importance of rapid case identification, isolation, contact tracing and coordination between health authorities. However, the circumstances of the current case must be assessed on their own evidence.

How Ebola Spreads

Ebola Virus Disease is a severe illness caused by viruses in the Orthoebolavirus genus. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the average case fatality rate across Ebola disease outbreaks has been approximately 50 per cent, although rates have varied substantially depending on the virus involved, outbreak circumstances and access to medical care.

The disease is not spread through the air in the same way as infections transmitted through ordinary breathing in shared indoor spaces.

Instead, Ebola spreads primarily through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person who has developed symptoms, or through contact with the body of someone who has died from the disease.

Transmission can occur when infectious fluids enter the body through broken skin or the eyes, nose or mouth. Contaminated objects, including clothing, bedding and medical equipment, can also transmit the virus.

People may additionally become infected through contact with infected animals, particularly when handling sick or dead wildlife or through exposure to infected animal products.

Traditional burial practices involving direct contact with the body of someone who died from Ebola can also contribute to transmission if appropriate precautions are not taken.

Healthcare workers and family members caring for infected patients face increased risks when suitable protective measures are not used.

According to the WHO, people infected with Ebola do not transmit the disease before symptoms develop. Once symptoms begin, however, they can remain infectious while the virus is present in their blood and other body fluids.

Symptoms and Incubation Period

The incubation period for Ebola — the time between infection and the appearance of symptoms — ranges from two to 21 days.

Early symptoms can include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. These may be followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function and, in some cases, internal or external bleeding.

Because the early symptoms can resemble those of other illnesses, suspected cases require prompt medical assessment, particularly where there is a credible history of exposure.

Anyone who believes they may have been exposed should contact health professionals or the relevant public health authorities for guidance and avoid direct contact with others if symptoms develop.

People should not attempt to diagnose Ebola based on symptoms alone, as laboratory testing and professional assessment are necessary.

What Nigerians Should Avoid

Health authorities advise the public to avoid contact with the blood and body fluids of anyone suspected or confirmed to have Ebola, as well as materials that may have been contaminated.

People should also avoid handling sick or dead wild animals and should follow official guidance on safe care and burial practices where an Ebola infection is suspected or confirmed.

Healthcare workers should use appropriate infection prevention and control measures when assessing or treating suspected patients.

Members of the public should not stigmatise travellers from Uganda or DR Congo simply because of their travel history. Travel through a country does not automatically mean that a person is infected or that the country is the source of infection.

The public should rely on verified updates from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the WHO and other relevant health authorities rather than circulating unconfirmed claims.

Investigations Continue

Uganda’s clarification has established that the country reported no confirmed active Ebola cases at the time of its statement, while Nigeria’s investigation into the confirmed infection remains critical to determining the possible source of exposure and identifying contacts who may need monitoring.

The patient’s reported journey through eastern DR Congo and Uganda has made cross-border cooperation particularly important, but it does not by itself establish where she contracted the virus.

For Nigeria, the immediate priorities are to provide appropriate care for the patient, identify and monitor relevant contacts, strengthen infection prevention measures in healthcare facilities and communicate verified information to the public.

Further updates from Nigerian and Ugandan health authorities are expected to provide more clarity as investigations progress.
