Chidinma Modupe Okafor, a 30-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria, has shattered the Guinness World Record for the longest crocheting marathon, clocking an impressive 72 hours. This feat more than doubles the previous record of 34 hours and 7 minutes set by Alessandra Hayden of the USA in 2021.
Chidinma’s remarkable achievement was accomplished during a three-day “crochet-a-thon” where she created a stunning white dinner gown. Her passion for crocheting, which began in childhood, drove her to push her physical and mental limits and showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft.
To achieve this record, Chidinma had to crochet continuously, with only two hours of rest allowed per day. She had to strategize to maintain a consistent pace, minimize fatigue, and arrange for sufficient yarn and support staff to ensure an uninterrupted attempt.
She said, “I aim to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft and promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits.”
“Crocheting is the process of creating textiles or clothing by using a hook to interlock loops of yarn or wool. My preparation for the record attempt involved rigorous training and mental conditioning,” she revealed.
Chidinma further said, “It also required physical endurance and strategizing to maintain a consistent pace while minimizing fatigue, additionally, logistics such as arranging for sufficient yarn with support staff were crucial for the uninterrupted progress of the attempt.”
Initially, Chidinma aimed to crochet a wedding gown but later decided to convert it into a dinner gown suitable for various occasions due to fatigue. Her accomplishment draws inspiration from fellow Nigerian Hilda Baci’s record-breaking cooking marathon and joins a list of Nigerians who have achieved remarkable Guinness World Records.
