Kogi State is mourning the death of one of its former governors, Ibrahim Idris, who died at 77.
Idris reportedly passed away in the United Kingdom on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
News of his passing prompted a visit to his Abuja home by several prominent Kogi officials. Among those who paid their respects were Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former governor Yahaya Bello and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abdullahi Bello.
Other senior members of the state administration also joined the delegation to offer their sympathies to the family.
The visit was made known by Onogwu Muhammed, who serves as Special Adviser on Public Relations to Governor Ododo and previously worked as Yahaya Bello’s Chief Press Secretary. He shared pictures from the condolence visit on Facebook.
Idris’ political career in Kogi included nearly nine years at the helm of the state. He took over as governor in May 2003 and secured another term following the 2007 election. His tenure came to an end in January 2012, when Idris Wada took over the leadership of the state.
No official explanation for Idris’ death was immediately available following the announcement.
The former governor’s death has also attracted tributes from political figures. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator for Kogi Central, expressed sadness over his passing and acknowledged his place in the state’s political development and the history of the PDP.
