Obi Releases Anambra Debt Records

The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has made public further financial records which he said provide details of the funds available to the Anambra State Government when he completed his tenure as governor in 2014.

The documents were circulated on X by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, a political support organisation linked to Obi’s running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The latest development has added to the ongoing disagreement between Obi and the Anambra State Government over the financial condition of the state at the end of his administration.

The controversy centres on the level of debt and other financial commitments inherited by successive administrations in Anambra.

The government of Governor Chukwuma Soludo had previously claimed that the state continued to meet financial obligations associated with projects and commitments undertaken by earlier administrations. The claims included liabilities allegedly connected to the periods when Obi and his successor, Willie Obiano, were in office.

Obi has repeatedly dismissed the allegations, insisting that his administration left Anambra in a financially stable position.

The former governor had earlier published documents relating to the transition process between his administration and that of Obiano. He also called on the current state government to make available records that could substantiate its assertions regarding debts allegedly inherited from his tenure.

In the latest development, additional documents have now emerged, with Obi maintaining that they provide further evidence of the financial position of Anambra at the point when he left office.

The records reportedly contain details of various bank accounts and the balances held in them around the period of the transition.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement drew attention to the figures contained in the documents and urged members of the public to independently examine the records.

In a message posted on X, the group pointed specifically to the bank statements and the identities of the officials who signed the documents.

The organisation argued that the signatures, names and official designations of the relevant bank representatives were contained in the records, allowing the information to be subjected to independent verification.

The group encouraged Nigerians interested in the controversy to examine the documents and confirm the information directly from the relevant financial institutions.

The renewed dispute comes as political attention increasingly shifts towards the 2027 general elections, with Obi preparing to contest the presidential election under the NDC platform.

The former Anambra governor has continued to defend his record in office, particularly his administration’s handling of public finances and infrastructure projects.

The financial controversy has also placed renewed focus on the transition between Obi and Obiano, as well as the obligations inherited by successive governments in the state.

While the Soludo administration has maintained its position regarding inherited financial commitments, Obi has challenged the claims and insisted that documentary evidence should be used to establish the true position.

The newly released records are therefore expected to form part of the continuing debate over Anambra’s finances and the fiscal record of previous administrations.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement’s decision to publicise the documents has further amplified the dispute, particularly on social media, where supporters of the different political camps have continued to exchange claims over the state’s financial history.

Obi’s supporters have pointed to the latest records as evidence supporting his account of the state’s finances at the time of his departure, while the wider controversy remains centred on how previous financial commitments should be attributed and accounted for.

The documents have consequently renewed calls for the relevant figures and records to be independently examined as the disagreement between Obi and the Anambra State Government continues.
