The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that consultations are at an advanced stage for the constitution and inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party disclosed that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have been given authority to nominate several key officers who will serve on the campaign council.
According to the NDC, Obi and Kwankwaso have held meetings with National Leader Henry Seriake Dickson and other senior party officials as consultations continue over the structure of the campaign organisation.
The party said a comprehensive organogram for the campaign council was prepared in August and forwarded to the presidential candidate and his running mate for their input. It added that nominations had also been received from stakeholders across the country.
Among the positions to be nominated by Obi and Kwankwaso are Director-General, Deputy Director-General for the North, campaign spokesperson and deputy spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director.
The NDC said the finance officials would work with the party’s National Treasurer to administer campaign funds in line with transparency requirements and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act.
The party further disclosed that funds raised for the presidential campaign would be paid into a dedicated campaign account. The account would be supervised by officers nominated by the presidential candidate, his running mate and the National Treasurer.
The party said a campaign timetable had also been proposed but its implementation was awaiting the conclusion of funding and fundraising arrangements to be led by Obi and Kwankwaso.
The inauguration of the campaign council, which was initially scheduled for the first week of September, was postponed due to Obi’s travel schedule.
The NDC said the council would be formally announced and inaugurated after the presidential candidate and his running mate submit their outstanding inputs.
The party also urged its candidates and support groups to avoid internal disagreements and concentrate on preparations for the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, the NDC distanced itself from a purported Presidential Campaign Council announced under the banner of the “OK Movement”.
The party described the structure as unauthorised and said it did not originate from or receive approval from its leadership.
The NDC warned that no individual or support group had the authority to constitute or announce a campaign council in the party’s name without prior approval from the National Working Committee.
The party acknowledged the contributions of support groups but cautioned them against presenting themselves as parallel structures to the official party organisation.
The NDC also disclosed that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against John Ugulu over what the party described as conduct during its Lagos State primary election.
Separately, the party directed its state and local government chairmen to meet with candidates and stakeholders within two weeks to compile lists of polling agents for the National Assembly, governorship and state assembly elections.
The lists will subsequently be reviewed and ratified by the party leadership before the selected agents undergo training.
The party said the process was part of its preparations to establish a coordinated campaign and election-day structure ahead of the 2027 polls.
