Students of the Rivers State University (RSU) are currently staging a protest over rising insecurity at the Omuoha Satellite Town, where many of them reside—particularly those from the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The protest, which began earlier today, saw students gathering at the main school gate carrying placards and chanting as they demanded urgent intervention from the university management. According to the protesting students, they have been repeatedly attacked and robbed by members of the host community, leaving them feeling unsafe in their own lodge environment.
The students insist that they can no longer continue living under constant fear. Their demands are clear: the university must either provide adequate security for those staying at the Omuoha Satellite Campus or relocate them back to the main campus where security is more assured.
Protesters say they have made several informal complaints in the past, but no tangible action has been taken. They are therefore calling on the Vice-Chancellor to address the situation immediately and protect their lives and property.
As of the time of filing this report, the protest is still ongoing, with students blocking parts of the school entrance to ensure their voices are heard.
