The Edo State Government has announced the postponement of school resumption, initially scheduled for September 9, due to the recent surge in petrol prices and the challenges faced by parents and guardians. In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, the government directed that all public and private schools remain closed until further notice.
The statement attributed the postponement to the “tension from the recent increase in fuel prices and the challenges faced by parents and guardians.” The government urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to closely monitor their children’s activities during this time.
The decision comes amid a fuel price hike, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) increasing the pump price of petrol to ₦855 per liter, followed by independent petroleum marketers and black marketers selling at even higher prices. The move aims to alleviate the burden on parents and guardians struggling with the current economic situation.
