The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, recognised as West Africa’s first road race to receive a World Athletics Label, is set for global live broadcast on May 30, according to the organisers.

Since its debut in 2013, the competition has developed into one of the continent’s most respected road races, consistently drawing top-distance runners from countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and host nation Nigeria.

The race route stretches from Apana Road to Okpekpe in Edo State, a scenic community located in the Edo North Senatorial District. Athletes will compete across a challenging 10-kilometre course made up of hilly terrain and paved roads.

Kenyan athlete Daniel Simiu Ebenyo currently owns the men’s course record after clocking 28 minutes and 28 seconds, while Kazakhstan’s Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui, who was born in Kenya, holds the women’s best time of 32 minutes 38 seconds, achieved during the 2023 edition.

Organisers revealed that this year’s event will once again attract a blend of international elite runners and Nigeria’s leading road race athletes, with the competition’s Gold Label recognition and attractive rewards helping to maintain its global appeal.

Media and Activation Director Dare Esan said the race has remained relevant on the international athletics calendar since earning global recognition in 2015, adding that it continues to highlight Nigeria’s ability to successfully organise events of international standard.

Fans across the world will be able to follow the race live through M4STV’s digital platforms, including its website and apps available on Google Play Store, Apple App Store, Roku and Amazon Appstore.

Live analysis and race commentary will be handled by an experienced athletics reporter who is also part of the World Athletics Media Study Group.

Beyond sports, the event has also contributed to the promotion of tourism and economic activities in Edo State, as Okpekpe’s unique landscape and farming opportunities continue to draw attention from tourists and investors alike.
