KAEDCO Cuts Off Kaduna Govt House Electricity Due to N2.9 Billion Debt

The Kaduna State Government House and other state government accounts have had their electricity supply cut off by Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO) for non-payment of bills.

Kaduna Electric announced the disconnection after extensive efforts to resolve the issue through consultations and reconciliations.

The outstanding balance for the electricity used by the Kaduna State Government House and other state government agencies from January 2024 to July 2024 alone amounts to a staggering N916,856,991.87, according to a statement released by Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company on Friday.

‘’This figure, including the historical debt, has left the State Government with a huge debt that currently stands at a total of Two Billion, Nine Hundred and Fourty-Three Million Sixty Thousand One Hundred and Sixteen Naira Seventy-Seven Kobo (N2,943,060,116.77), ‘’the statement said.

The statement claims that the Kaduna State Government’s debt is still very high even after a recent payment of N256,920,963.88 for electricity used between September 2023 and December 2023 was made on May 9, 2024.

However, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara, three other states covered by the Kaduna Electric franchise, have kept their accounts in good standing by consistently making their required payments for electricity and other repayments to Kaduna Electric.

On July 21, 2024, a formal notice of disconnection was sent, and on July 22, 2024, the Office of the Governor received it.

Kaduna Electric has made it clear that cutting off service was a last resort used when all other options for settling the payment dispute had run out.
