More than 200 young athletes are set to converge in Lagos for the concluding screening phase of the Templar-Adrenale Athlete Development Initiative, regarded as one of Nigeria’s most significant grassroots basketball talent showcases.
The final selection will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the recently upgraded Dolphins Basketball Court located in Mongoro, Ikeja. The programme is being delivered in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Adeyinka Adeboye, reflecting increasing federal involvement in organised youth sports development across the country.
Over the past few months, talent scouts and development teams have moved across various states in Nigeria, carefully identifying outstanding basketball prospects aged 13 to 18. Their search began during the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta and continued through multiple rounds of assessments conducted nationwide.
Officials of the programme explain that players who make the final cut will be admitted into the first cohort of the Templar-Adrenale High-Performance Development Programme. This scheme is structured to offer advanced basketball training, academic support, mentorship, character-building sessions, and opportunities for international exposure.
During the event, Adeyinka Adeboye is also expected to receive an international honour from United States-based partners, recognising his office’s dedication to promoting grassroots sports and empowering young athletes in Nigeria.
Sports analysts and stakeholders suggest that the initiative may signal a turning point in Nigerian sports development, shifting the focus from simple talent discovery to a more organised system that nurtures and guides athletes toward long-term success.
