Tinubu Honours Promise to ASUU, Releases N50 Billion for University Workers’ Allowances

Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured his administration’s promise to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) by approving and releasing N50 billion for the payment of outstanding earned academic allowances owed to lecturers and other staff of federal universities across the country. The move has been described as a significant step toward restoring trust between the government and university-based unions, and a signal of Tinubu’s commitment to ending the perennial cycle of strikes that has crippled Nigeria’s higher education system for years.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, announced the release of the funds in a statement issued in Abuja, noting that the payment was in line with President Tinubu’s directive to resolve all pending financial disputes between the government and tertiary institution unions. He said the gesture underscores the administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of lecturers, stabilising the academic calendar, and promoting a culture of dialogue rather than confrontation in the university system.
According to Dr. Alausa, the N50 billion payment covers earned allowances and arrears owed to members of ASUU as well as non-academic staff under the umbrella of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU). He emphasised that the release of funds followed months of consultations and verification exercises to ensure transparency and accountability in disbursement. “President Tinubu has made it clear that his government will not pay lip service to education. He has backed his words with action by approving these payments to ensure our universities remain strike-free,” Alausa said.
For years, the relationship between the federal government and ASUU has been characterised by disputes over unpaid allowances, poor funding of universities, and the non-implementation of various agreements reached with successive administrations. The most recent major industrial action by ASUU in 2022 lasted eight months, causing widespread disruption to academic activities and affecting millions of students nationwide. When President Tinubu took office in 2023, he pledged to rebuild trust with the unions and prioritise education as a key driver of national development.
In addition to the N50 billion payment, the Tinubu administration has also initiated reforms aimed at preventing future strikes. The Education Minister disclosed that the President has directed the Ministry to maintain constant engagement with ASUU and other unions to address grievances before they escalate. This, he said, is part of a new strategy designed to replace the confrontational approach of the past with sustained communication and prompt policy responses.
Reactions to the President’s gesture have been largely positive. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) commended Tinubu for keeping his word, describing the action as a “breath of fresh air” in the education sector. In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, NANS said the payment of outstanding allowances would go a long way in boosting morale among lecturers and ensuring that students complete their studies without interruptions. “President Tinubu has shown that he is serious about rebuilding our universities. We urge him to sustain this momentum,” the statement read.
Similarly, several education analysts and labour observers have lauded the move, describing it as one of the boldest efforts to rebuild confidence between the government and academic unions. Dr. Uche Chinedu, a public policy expert at the University of Lagos, noted that the government’s action represents “a turning point in the longstanding dispute between ASUU and the federal government.” He, however, cautioned that the gesture should be followed by structural reforms in funding, autonomy, and university governance to achieve lasting stability.
Despite the positive reception, ASUU leaders have called for vigilance and consistency. Speaking anonymously, one senior member of the union said the government’s payment is “a welcome development” but urged the administration to implement the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement and address issues such as salary harmonisation, university autonomy, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as an alternative to the controversial Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has assured that the Tinubu administration will continue to prioritise education funding and work with relevant agencies to ensure that Nigerian universities compete globally. The Minister reaffirmed the President’s stance that “no student should lose an academic year due to preventable strikes,” adding that the government was committed to building a sustainable environment for teaching, learning, and research.
With this development, optimism is growing that Nigeria’s public universities may finally experience a period of stability after years of disruption. Whether this momentum can be sustained will depend on the government’s ability to consistently meet its obligations and the willingness of both parties to maintain open channels of communication. For now, however, President Tinubu’s honouring of his promise to ASUU marks a hopeful turning point for Nigeria’s troubled tertiary education system.
