Tension erupted in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State on Sunday as some residents reportedly burned campaign posters belonging to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The incident, which has since generated reactions across social media, was captured in a video seen by DAILY POST. The footage showed a group of agitated youths destroying and setting ablaze campaign materials bearing the images of the newly announced NDC presidential ticket.
In the same video, the NDC chairman in Ungogo Local Government Area, Bilyaminu Bachirawa, was allegedly attacked by a crowd of angry youths. Witnesses said Bachirawa was dragged from a moving motorcycle while attempting to leave the area amid the growing unrest.
According to reports, the situation quickly escalated as the youths chased after the motorcycle, shouting and expressing their displeasure. The NDC official was said to have narrowly escaped being lynched as tensions heightened in the community. The circumstances that triggered the confrontation remain unclear, although the incident occurred shortly after the announcement of the party’s presidential ticket.
The development comes barely hours after the NDC officially unveiled Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The declaration was made on Saturday evening during a party event attended by key stakeholders and supporters.
Moments after securing the party’s presidential ticket, Obi introduced former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate. The announcement marked a significant political alliance between the two prominent figures ahead of the next election cycle.
Both Obi and Kwankwaso recently left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the NDC. Their defection followed months of reported disagreements within the ADC, including internal leadership disputes and legal battles that allegedly affected the party’s stability and operations.
Political observers have described the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance as one of the major developments ahead of the 2027 elections, given the influence and support base both politicians command in different parts of the country.
However, the violence recorded in parts of Kano has raised concerns among stakeholders about the need for political tolerance and peaceful engagement among supporters of different parties. Analysts have warned against actions that could inflame tensions or lead to further unrest as political activities begin to intensify.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Peter Obi nor Rabiu Kwankwaso had publicly reacted to the incident. Similarly, security agencies in Kano State had yet to issue an official statement regarding the destruction of campaign materials and the alleged attack on the local NDC chairman.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and take appropriate measures to prevent a recurrence, especially as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue across the country.
