The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) recently discovered and permanently closed 22 unauthorized Colleges of Education.
This action came as part of an extensive operation targeting illegitimate teacher training institutions across Nigeria.
The achievement was highlighted in the commission’s latest report, which was accessed by our reporter.
“The NCCE identified and shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across the country.”
Additionally, the commission reported carrying out comprehensive audits of staff and financial records across all 21 federal colleges of education.
“The NCCE conducted personnel audit, financial monitoring in all the 21 federal colleges of education,” the commission said.
Earlier, President Bola Tinubu had called on the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the NCCE to take stern action against unauthorized higher education institutions.
During the 14th convocation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja, the President urged these regulatory bodies to clamp down on so-called “certificate mills” that erode the credibility of the nation’s educational system.
Tinubu, represented at the event by Rakiya Ilyasu, the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, emphasized that the academic system’s integrity must remain intact.
“At this juncture, it has become imperative to reiterate that this administration remains committed to strengthening the integration of all agencies involved in the administration of education to enhance efficiency and quality,” the President said.
He further noted, “The National Youth Service Corps, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, the National Universities Commission, the National Board for Technical Education and the National Commission for Colleges of Education are working in alignment to improve the quality of education and ensure that cases of forgery and unrecognised institutions both within and outside the country have no place in our education ecosystem.”
