Veteran Nigerian actor Patrick Doyle has lauded Afrobeat star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, for his resilience and humility in the face of public criticism. Doyle expressed admiration for how the global music sensation has managed to turn adversities into stepping stones for greater success, likening Davido’s journey to the life philosophy of the late nationalist and statesman, Obafemi Awolowo.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Doyle shared insights into Awolowo’s concept of “Eebudola,” a Yoruba phrase meaning “adversities turned to blessings.” The actor recalled attending a birthday party for Segun Awolowo at the statesman’s residence in Ikenne, where he first encountered the term under a Pisces zodiac drawing. Doyle later read an explanation from Awolowo himself, who reflected on how challenges aimed at tarnishing his reputation often became opportunities for growth.
Doyle drew parallels between this philosophy and Davido’s life, noting how the singer has endured criticism from peers yet emerged stronger each time.
“Bringing it to the present, I have noticed a young man who of late has been on the receiving end of aspersions from his peers,” Doyle wrote. “The more they attack him and he ignores them, the more his stature as a global star shines.”
Doyle praised Davido’s humility, describing him as “perhaps the least arrogant of his peers even when he has the credentials to be the most arrogant, given the aristocracy of his antecedents compared to his street-brought-up peers.” He commended the artist’s ability to remain composed in conflicts and his reluctance to engage in public feuds, attributing this to values instilled by his father, Adedeji Adeleke, a billionaire businessman renowned for his modesty.
While acknowledging Davido’s flashy persona, Doyle clarified that it aligns with the demands of his career. He also highlighted the singer’s receptiveness to correction from elders, applauding his respectful demeanor and willingness to adjust when necessary.
“In short, he has displayed all the traits of a true ‘Omoluabi,’” Doyle concluded, referencing a Yoruba term that signifies a person of good character.
Doyle’s remarks come amidst a period where Davido has faced increasing public scrutiny. Despite this, the artist’s global recognition continues to soar, bolstered by his chart-topping music, philanthropy, and unwavering fanbase.
The veteran actor’s tribute not only underscores Davido’s resilience but also positions him as an embodiment of the “Eebudola” spirit in the entertainment industry—a figure turning challenges into triumphs on the global stage.
