One Obinna Eze has been sentenced to death for the murder of a six-month-old boy, Chimaobi Igwe. The High Court sitting in Akwukwu-Igbo Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State gave the ruling, under the precision of Justice Marcel Okoh who sentenced the culprit to death by hanging.

Justice Marcel Okoh delivered the judgment in Asaba, ruling that the prosecution, led by State Solicitor-General Omamuzo Erebe, proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The court heard that on October 27, 2023, the defendant attacked his co-tenant, Mrs. Blessing Igwe, and her six-month-old son, Chimaobi Igwe, with a cutlass during a disagreement over a missing phone. Mrs. Igwe sustained severe injuries, while her baby suffered deep head wounds. The child died a week later from his injuries.

Key evidence included eyewitness testimony from Mrs. Igwe, who recounted the attack, and a medical report from pathologist Dr. Emmanuel Egbuduka, who confirmed the baby’s death was caused by penetrating head injuries inflicted by a sharp object.

Justice Okoh relied on the mother’s testimony, the autopsy report, and the defendant’s confessional statement to convict him. The court rejected the defendant’s denial and his retraction of the confession, emphasizing the consistency of the evidence presented by the prosecution.

The defendant was sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of Chimaobi Igwe. Justice Okoh declared, “The prosecution has established its case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

This judgment underscores the commitment of Delta State’s judiciary to deliver justice in cases of violent crimes.
