At least 105 fatalities have been reported following an explosion involving a petrol tanker in Majiya town, located in the Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Shiisu Adam, the Public Relations Officer for the State Police Command, confirmed this information during a phone interview with PUNCH Online on Wednesday.

He noted that approximately 55 individuals sustained various injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital.

“As I speak with you, the casualty count stands at around 105, with 55 injuries, an increase from the previously reported 50,” he stated.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night in Majiya Town when the driver of the tanker lost control near Khadija University.

The tanker was traveling from Kano to Nguru town in Yobe State when the driver ultimately lost control, resulting in an explosion.

Reports indicate that after the explosion, some individuals approached the site to collect fuel, which led to additional fatalities.

Furthermore, some of the injured have been transferred to the Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kudu due to the limited bed availability at Ringim General Hospital.

Plans are underway for a mass burial for the deceased, as many were burned beyond recognition.
