Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on political opponents and those who criticise him to shift their attention from personal attacks and focus instead on the pressing challenges confronting Nigeria.
The former Anambra State governor made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, where he addressed comments made by some politicians who frequently mention his name while discussing national issues.
Responding to questions about his reaction to criticism from political figures, Obi said he was not concerned about personal attacks or negative remarks directed at him. He argued that such discussions take attention away from the major problems affecting millions of Nigerians.
According to him, the country is currently dealing with serious economic and social difficulties, including widespread poverty, increasing hardship, insecurity and concerns over food shortages. He maintained that public conversations should be centred on finding solutions to these challenges rather than focusing on an individual.
Obi stated that Nigeria’s current situation requires urgent attention, stressing that the priority should be improving the lives of citizens, reducing poverty levels, creating opportunities and ensuring greater security across the country.
He explained that criticism or name-calling would not distract him from his commitment to national development, adding that the real issues that deserve discussion are how to provide better living conditions and restore hope among Nigerians.
The NDC presidential hopeful, who contested the 2023 presidential election and lost to President Bola Tinubu, has faced accusations from some quarters that he remains determined to occupy the country’s highest political office. However, Obi insisted that his ambition is not driven by personal desire for power but by his desire to see Nigeria achieve meaningful progress.
He said his main concern is not becoming president at all costs but contributing to the emergence of a nation where citizens can thrive regardless of their background or connections.
Obi said he wants to see a Nigeria where young people can access quality opportunities, secure employment, establish businesses and compete favourably with their peers globally. He emphasised the importance of building a society where success is determined by talent, hard work and opportunity rather than personal relationships or social status.
The former governor also stated that his interest in seeking the presidency is based on his belief that he can contribute to transforming the country and promoting unity among Nigerians.
According to him, leadership should be about service, creating practical solutions and demonstrating that positive change is possible. He expressed confidence that Nigeria can overcome its difficulties if the right policies and leadership approach are implemented.
Obi further highlighted his humanitarian activities in different parts of the country, particularly visits and support provided to communities affected by violence, displacement and natural disasters.
He noted that his involvement in assisting vulnerable Nigerians was part of his broader commitment to improving lives beyond political positions.
The NDC candidate maintained that his focus remains on building a united, prosperous and secure Nigeria where every citizen has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.
