Nigerian rapper and activist Folarin Falana, known as Falz, has confirmed his contact with the controversial social media figure Idris Okuneye, also referred to as Bobrisky, regarding legal challenges faced by Bobrisky earlier this year.
Falz revealed that Bobrisky requested N3 million to secure a VIP area at the Correctional Centre.
This clarification was made on Wednesday following a letter from Falz’s legal team, Falana & Falana Chambers, addressed to Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan. The letter demanded a retraction of defamatory claims made against Falz.
The correspondence stated that a recent social media post implied that Falz had collaborated with Bobrisky to “pervert the course of justice” by providing financial support for Bobrisky’s legal issues.
In the letter, dated September 26, 2024, Falz’s attorney, Taiwo E. Olawanle, detailed the events, asserting that although Bobrisky did reach out for advice, Falz categorically refused to offer any financial help.
The letter noted, “Your post from September 25, 2024, on Instagram, which insinuated that Falz and his father were involved in the Bobrisky situation, has drawn our attention due to its defamatory nature.”
“To clarify, our client did not initiate any discussion with Mr. Idris Okuneye. Our client possesses documentation proving that Mr. Idris was the one who initiated contact.”
“On May 4, 2024, Mr. Idris Okuneye (AKA Bobrisky) reached out, seeking a phone conversation. Our client, aware of the charges against Bobrisky, willingly engaged, thinking legal advice might be needed.”
“However, instead of seeking advice, Mr. Okuneye expressed distress and requested N3,000,000 to pay officials for a VIP stay at the Correctional Centre,” the letter continued.
“Our client advised against any payments to the officials, but Bobrisky insisted, claiming that his lawyers had mishandled his case by advising him to plead guilty. Our client consistently declined the request for funds.”
The letter accused VeryDarkMan of publishing unfounded allegations, including suggesting that Falz was involved in a homosexual relationship and was attempting to secure a presidential pardon for Bobrisky.
Falana & Falana Chambers demanded an immediate retraction and a public apology across all platforms where the statements were made, warning that failure to comply within 24 hours could lead to legal action for damages due to the harm to Falz’s reputation.
A viral video from VeryDarkMan featured Bobrisky alleging that unnamed EFCC officials accepted N15 million from him to drop money laundering charges, a claim Bobrisky has since denied. The EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, has called for an investigation into the allegations.
