President Bola Tinubu has ordered the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate assistance to victims of the devastating floods in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The president’s directive comes as the worst flood in recent decades has displaced thousands of residents, damaged critical infrastructure, and affected key facilities such as the Post Office and Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the flooding and extended his condolences to the government and people of Borno State, particularly those who have lost their livelihoods due to the disaster.
The president has called for the immediate evacuation of people from affected areas and assured Governor Babagana Zulum of the Federal Government’s readiness to collaborate and address the immediate humanitarian needs of those affected. He also reaffirmed his commitment to mobilizing federal resources to support the state during this challenging time.
The floods, triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, have cut off Maiduguri from the rest of the state, resulting in significant losses, including millions of naira and livestock, and displacing thousands of people. Channels Television reported on the severity of the floods, highlighting the urgent need for assistance.
