2027: NDC Open to Coalition

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its willingness to enter into coalition talks with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, while voicing confidence that any alliance eventually formed would support the party’s candidates.

National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

According to the former Bayelsa State governor, the party remains open to discussions with like-minded political groups in a bid to strengthen the opposition ahead of the polls.

“As an opposition leader, our party, the NDC, will be open to conversations within that space,” Dickson said.

He, however, noted that it would be premature to speculate on the outcome of any discussions, expressing optimism that any coalition arrangement would ultimately rally behind the NDC’s candidates.

Dickson stressed that his position was not based on any claim of superiority over other opposition parties, explaining that coalition negotiations would naturally follow the completion of the nomination process.

“I am not claiming superiority. Once the nomination process has been concluded, we will move into another phase of discussions, and we are hopeful that whatever arrangements emerge will favour our candidates,” he said.

The senator representing Bayelsa West also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to working with other opposition stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the next general election.

The NDC’s coalition remarks come amid ongoing legal challenges over the party’s registration. A Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State, recently set aside its earlier judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the party as a political party.

Despite the development, the NDC has maintained that it remains on course for the 2027 elections and has already commenced the appeal process against the judgment.
