MDCAN Criticizes Unfair Leave Policy

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has demanded that the Federal Government immediately revoke a contentious circular, which it argues unjustly penalizes healthcare workers by denying them their legally entitled leave of absence.

In a statement released after their National Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, MDCAN expressed strong disapproval of the government’s recent policy, labeling it as a breach of civil service regulations. The communique, endorsed by MDCAN President Prof. Aminu Mohammad and Secretary Prof. Daiyabu Ibrahim, stressed that the circular is at odds with established civil service guidelines.

The policy in question is said to force doctors and other healthcare professionals into resignation rather than permitting them the leave of absence they are legally entitled to. MDCAN criticized this move as discriminatory and called for the government to reverse the decision.

Furthermore, the MDCAN statement addressed discriminatory practices in Nigerian universities regarding the appointment of Vice-Chancellors. It highlighted recent instances of biased advertisements against candidates with Medical and Dental Fellowships from NPMCN, WACS, and WACP, observed at institutions such as Nnamdi Azikiwe University, University of Abuja, and Delta State University. The association urged these universities to discontinue such discriminatory practices.

The association also voiced concerns over increasing insecurity in the nation, noting that healthcare workers are frequently targeted, even within hospital environments.

MDCAN recommended that the Federal Ministry of Education and the Nigerian Universities Commission establish a fair and inclusive framework for Vice-Chancellor appointments, ensuring equal opportunities for all qualified candidates.

The association called on the relevant authorities to address these urgent issues to promote fairness and protect the safety of healthcare professionals across the country.
