Algeria manager Vladimir Petkovic says his players are gradually developing the mentality needed to compete with the world’s best as they prepare for a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout tie against Switzerland on Friday.
The Desert Foxes looked out of contention after a crushing 3-0 loss to holders Argentina in their opening fixture, with Lionel Messi leading the South Americans to victory. However, Algeria bounced back strongly, picking up four points from their remaining group matches to secure a place in the last 32.
Their turnaround has been driven by an adventurous style of play and strong character, although Petkovic acknowledged that defensive lapses remain a concern. Algeria were pushed all the way in their narrow win over Austria, exposing areas the coach believes still require attention.
Even so, the Bosnian-born tactician is pleased with the direction his squad is heading and insists every match has shown signs of improvement.
“We’re building a winning mentality, step by step,” Petkovic said via CAF Online.
“In major tournaments, it’s important to try to keep improving game by game, and that’s what we’re doing.”
This year’s tournament marks Algeria’s fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage. Their deepest World Cup run came in Brazil 2014, where they reached the knockout phase before being eliminated by eventual champions Germany after an extra-time battle.
Having failed to qualify for the editions staged in Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, the North Africans are determined to make this campaign one to remember as they chase a place in the round of 16 at the expense of Switzerland.
