Femi Thomas, a board member of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, has applauded the country’s cyclists for their remarkable performance at the seventh Tour D’Afrique, describing the outing as a significant milestone for Nigerian cycling.
Speaking after the team’s return from the international cycling challenge, Thomas said the event provided a valuable platform for Nigerian riders to showcase their endurance, determination and growing competitiveness on the continental stage. The cyclists completed the journey and were received at the ECOWAS Secretariat in Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.
This year’s expedition, held between June 12 and June 19, covered more than 1,100 kilometres under the banner “Riding Against Climate Change: A 1,110km Journey with Zero CO₂ Emissions.” Nigeria was represented by 50 riders drawn from various cycling groups and associations nationwide.
The initiative was organised to commemorate World Bicycle Day while also recognising Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebrations, ECOWAS’ 51st anniversary and the vision of greater African unity. It equally promoted cycling as an eco-friendly alternative for transportation.
Thomas noted that the adventure offered participants an opportunity to test their limits and gain exposure to long-distance cycling. He explained that riders, especially newcomers, encountered unfamiliar conditions, adapted to demanding circumstances and successfully completed the task.
According to him, every edition of the event brings fresh lessons and unique experiences, making it an important avenue for personal growth and athletic development.
He also highlighted the environmental and social value of the programme, stating that its objectives are closely linked to several global development priorities championed by the United Nations.
Nigeria’s involvement in the tour was facilitated through a collaboration involving FT Cycle Care, the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and the Velo NG Community.
Following the successful conclusion of the regional cycling campaign, stakeholders believe the programme has reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to environmental advocacy, cross-border cooperation and the use of sport as a vehicle for social impact across the continent.
