The Aviation Ground Handlers Association of Nigeria further clarified that, aside from suspending services, it may also pursue every lawful avenue available under relevant statutes to recover all outstanding debts owed to its members.
However, the association said it had reviewed the timing of its ultimatum in consideration of ongoing workers’ celebrations and adjusted the enforcement schedule accordingly.
It explained that the revised notice period will now commence on Monday, 4 May 2026 and end on Wednesday, 6 May 2026. AGHAN added that if the issue remains unresolved by the end of this window, it will proceed with its planned measures without further delay.
Despite the rising tension between both parties, the ground handling body maintained that there is still room for constructive communication. It emphasised its readiness to engage in immediate discussions aimed at preventing any operational disruptions that could affect the broader aviation system.
AGHAN stated that it remains open to dialogue and continues to prefer a peaceful settlement that would safeguard airline operations, airport efficiency, and the interests of the travelling public. It stressed that avoiding disruption remains a priority, even as it insists on the settlement of the debt.
In its remarks, the association said:
“Notwithstanding the circumstances outlined above, we continue to express our willingness to participate in prompt and productive engagement designed to resolve this dispute in an amicable manner and ensure uninterrupted aviation services for passengers and stakeholders.”
The group also underscored the seriousness of the matter by confirming that key government and security institutions have been formally informed of the situation. These include the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, and the Department of State Services.
AGHAN explained that this step was necessary due to the wider implications of the dispute, noting that the issue goes beyond commercial disagreements and could potentially affect national economic stability, aviation safety, security coordination, and overall public interest.
It further stated that the involvement of relevant authorities is important given the sensitive nature of airport operations and the critical role ground handlers play in maintaining smooth flight activities across the country.
While maintaining its firm stance on debt recovery, the association reiterated that it still prefers dialogue over confrontation. It urged all affected airlines to take immediate steps toward resolving the matter within the stipulated timeframe to avoid service interruptions that could impact flight schedules and passenger movement nationwide.
