The fintech company said the viral message contained several indications that it did not originate from OPay.
“OPay is not going on break in September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!” the company said.
OPay urged customers to carefully examine information circulating online and rely only on announcements published through its verified communication channels.
The company also warned users against sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic among customers.
“Take a closer look at the viral post, and you’ll spot the red flags. Always verify before you share. Filter the noise! Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates,” the company added.
Growing Problem of Brand Impersonation
The false OPay shutdown announcement highlights the growing challenge faced by businesses and financial institutions as fraudsters increasingly use social media to impersonate established brands.
In recent months, several Nigerian companies, including May & Baker, MTN and Wema Bank, have had to publicly distance themselves from messages circulated by unauthorised individuals claiming to represent their organisations.
Fraudsters have also increasingly used social media platforms to advertise fake grants, loans, giveaways and investment opportunities.
A July investigation by PREMIUM TIMES found that unauthorised advertisements on TikTok were being used to target Nigerians with fraudulent financial offers.
Some of the advertisements were reportedly generated using artificial intelligence and designed to make the fake offers appear legitimate.
OPay Urges Customers to Verify Information
OPay’s warning comes amid growing concerns over financial scams and misinformation distributed through social media.
The company advised customers to verify claims before taking action, particularly when such messages involve their money or account information.
Customers are therefore advised not to withdraw funds or provide personal information based solely on unverified social media posts.
Established in 2018, OPay has grown into one of Nigeria’s major digital financial platforms, offering services including payments, savings, credit and other financial products through its mobile money operations.
The company has also expanded its presence beyond Nigeria into other emerging markets in Africa and Asia, including Indonesia, Pakistan and Egypt.
For now, OPay has made clear that there is no planned September shutdown, and customers can continue using its services.
