Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has unveiled a 12-point policy agenda ahead of the 2027 presidential election, outlining his plans to address Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges if elected.

Atiku, who is seeking the presidency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the proposals public through his campaign team as part of his preparations for the election.

The agenda covers key areas including the economy, education, electricity, job creation, security, agriculture, healthcare, transportation, local government administration and restructuring of the federal system.

Atiku proposed the restoration of a targeted petroleum subsidy as part of measures to reduce transportation costs and ease the impact of rising living expenses on Nigerians.

He also promised to review the operations of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, including the possibility of forgiving some debts owed by beneficiaries.

On local government administration, the former vice president pledged to implement the Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy and ensure that funds meant for councils are paid directly to them.

Atiku also promised to revive the eastern maritime corridor by improving the ports in Port Harcourt, Calabar and Warri, while supporting the development of the Uyo Deep Sea Port.

According to the policy agenda, the development of the eastern and southern ports would reduce pressure on the Lagos port corridor, lower transportation costs and boost economic activities.

The former vice president further proposed reopening Nigeria’s land borders to legitimate commercial activities to support traders and strengthen regional trade.

On electricity, Atiku promised to review the existing tariff classification system, saying the reform would make electricity more affordable for consumers.

He also proposed a $10 billion startup and entrepreneurship financing programme aimed at providing capital for young Nigerians and businesses.

In the security sector, Atiku pledged to recruit more personnel, improve their welfare and strengthen the use of modern intelligence and technology to tackle insurgency, banditry and other crimes.

He also promised to improve security in farming communities, reduce production costs and provide greater access to financing for farmers.

On healthcare, Atiku proposed reforms aimed at improving access to affordable healthcare, addressing shortages of medical personnel and improving their welfare.

The former vice president further promised to devolve more powers to states and local governments by restructuring the federal system.

He also pledged to implement the Oronsaye Report as part of efforts to reduce government waste, eliminate duplication among agencies and improve efficiency in the public service.
