Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has declared Edwin van der Sar as the greatest goalkeeper of all time following his decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria.
The 24-year-old has steadily progressed in his career over the past few seasons. After sealing a move from Arsenal to Wrexham AFC in 2024, he played a key role in the club’s promotion from League One to the Championship. Since then, he has remained the team’s first-choice goalkeeper, recording 10 clean sheets in 38 matches as they continue their push for Premier League qualification.
Okonkwo is widely regarded for his composure, sharp reflexes, and command in the air, while also showing confidence when playing out from the back.
Speaking recently on the Wrexham Podcast, he reflected on his development and cited Van der Sar as a major influence during his formative years, noting how closely he followed the Dutch legend’s performances.
When asked about his goalkeeping idol, he said, “Van der Sar. Yeah, I grew up watching Van der Sar.”
Van der Sar, a former Manchester United star, is considered one of the finest goalkeepers in Premier League history, having won multiple league titles and the UEFA Champions League during his illustrious career.
Wrexham’s rise in recent years has been remarkable, climbing from the National League to becoming genuine contenders in the Championship within a short period. Despite only just earning promotion, they are already challenging for a spot in the top flight.
Currently sitting seventh in the table, Wrexham are just two points behind Southampton FC, who occupy the final playoff position.
With five fixtures remaining, Okonkwo and his teammates remain firmly in contention, knowing that a strong finish could secure a playoff berth.
Their remaining matches will see them take on Birmingham City FC, Stoke City FC, Oxford United FC, Coventry City FC, and Middlesbrough FC as they aim to gather maximum points.
On the international stage, Okonkwo could make his debut for Nigeria as early as May at the Unity Cup in Charlton, or during the June international window when the Super Eagles are set to face Poland and Portugal.
