Canada, U.S. Condemn Rising Violence Targeting Christians Across Nigeria

Canada has joined the United States in voicing concern over the growing violence and targeted attacks against Christians in Nigeria.

The development followed a passionate address by Canadian Conservative Party lawmaker Andrew Scheer, who called on the international community to pay urgent attention to what he described as a pattern of religious persecution and mass displacement across parts of the country.

Speaking before the Canadian Parliament, Scheer said that extremist groups had continued to unleash deadly attacks on Christian communities, destroying homes, schools, and places of worship.

“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to draw attention to the tragedy facing Christians in Nigeria,” he said.

Scheer reminded lawmakers that the crisis had persisted for years, blaming insurgent groups such as Boko Haram for orchestrating systematic campaigns to eliminate the Christian faith in Nigeria’s northern and central regions.

He recounted past atrocities, including the abduction of schoolgirls and the burning of civilians alive, describing the acts as part of a broader effort to erase Christianity from certain communities.

“The deadly terrorist organization Boko Haram is seeking to eliminate Christianity in Nigeria,” Scheer warned, adding that many victims continue to suffer in silence.

He cited reports that over 3.5 million people have been displaced, and more than 7,000 Christians killed this year alone, with at least three churches destroyed daily.

The lawmaker criticized what he described as the “global silence” surrounding the crisis, saying the lack of sustained international attention had emboldened extremist groups.

“Sadly, the world is turning a blind eye to the plight of Christians in Nigeria,” he said. “There are no embedded journalists covering the violence, and few leaders are addressing the issue.”

Scheer called for coordinated global action, including humanitarian support, diplomatic pressure, and stronger advocacy to protect vulnerable populations.

“We cannot stay silent,” he declared. “The world must act to deliver aid and stand with those suffering. They deserve visibility, compassion, and hope.”

He concluded with a message of solidarity, urging Christians in Nigeria to remain steadfast in their faith and resilience, assuring them that their struggle will not be forgotten.
