Viagem Energy Debunks Media Report on Alleged N10bn Lawsuit in Enugu

Viagem Energy Services Ltd has dismissed as misleading a recent media report titled “Businessman Threatens N10bn Lawsuit Over Wanted Notice by Police.” The company described the publication as an attempt to sway public opinion in favour of suspects Babafemi Fagite, Raymond Akintayo, and Charles Obisike.

In a statement released to journalists in Enugu on Monday and signed by its Business Intelligence and Financial Adviser, Fortunatus Osuagwu, the firm faulted the report for failing to present the facts of the case accurately.

“We expect the media to investigate, interrogate, and report accurately in accordance with its responsibility, rather than lifting falsehoods from one side and presenting them to the public,” Osuagwu said.

According to the company, the case is currently under investigation by the IGP Monitoring Team, following a petition filed in January 2025 over an alleged plot involving kidnapping and attempted assassination linked to the suspects.

Viagem Energy alleged that the defendants forged ownership documents and fraudulently sold three brand-new 1MW gas plants leased to Cabota Energy Services Limited. Beyond the fraudulent sale, the company claimed the suspects also devised a plan to eliminate one of the complainants.

“When the complainants began searching for their gas plants, the suspects arranged and kidnapped one of them in Lagos. He was blindfolded, handcuffed, and placed on an Air Peace flight to Abuja, where they had concluded plans to assassinate him,” Osuagwu alleged.

The firm noted that despite threats and intimidation, the IGP Monitoring Unit has remained resolute in pursuing the case. Led by CSP Laraba, DSP Kuyembo, ASP Jimmy Danny, and ASP Gado, the unit has reportedly spent months tracking the suspects and their associates.

After several unsuccessful police invitations for the suspects to answer to the allegations, the Force approached the Federal High Court in Abuja. On July 29, 2025, the court in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1426/2025 between the Inspector-General of Police and Obisike Charles Uche, Akintayo Raymond, and Babafemi Fagite, granted the police reliefs and declared the suspects wanted.

The company further disclosed that the suspects have been on the run since January 31, 2025. “Rather than submit themselves to the police for investigation, they have chosen, through their counsel (who is also a suspect), to challenge the legal process and malign the character of officers they could not compromise,” the statement added.

In a related development, the firm confirmed that the IGP Monitoring Unit has recovered the stolen gas plants at the Enugu State Government Water Facility, operated by Fedikore Limited.

Viagem Energy commended the officers of the unit for their commitment, stressing that the recovery underscores the importance of public support for law enforcement in the fight against crime.
