Stanley Nwabali has put the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping race on the back burner, saying his attention is firmly on rebuilding his form and helping Chippa United deliver a successful season.
The Nigerian goalkeeper returned to the South African club last month after leaving in February and spending several months without competitive football.
His comeback could hardly have gone better.
Nwabali marked his return to action by keeping a clean sheet in Chippa United’s opening game of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season. The 31-year-old made six saves and was subsequently named Man of the Match before starting again in the club’s second league fixture.
Despite losing his place as Nigeria’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper during his extended absence, Nwabali is refusing to make the national team a priority for now.
Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo have shared goalkeeping duties for the Super Eagles in recent months, but Nwabali said he is more interested in making an impact for his club than worrying about whether he will regain his international position.
“I’m not really worried about that one; I’m only focused on helping my club pick up as many points as possible. So for now, I’m not too worried about the national team,” he told SABC Sport.
For Nwabali, returning to Chippa has also been about rediscovering the feeling of belonging after a difficult period away from competitive football.
“I feel positive coming back to the club, not just for me but also for the team. The relationship and the agreement is all good. I just want the team to succeed this season,” he said.
He added, “Coming back to this club feels like I’m coming back to my family and my home, and I’m really happy to be back on the pitch, doing what I love.”
The goalkeeper’s latest appearance, however, ended on a sour note, with Chippa suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates at Kings Park Stadium. The result moved Pirates to the top of the Betway Premiership table after three matches, ahead on goal difference.
Nwabali’s international profile soared during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. He became a key figure in Nigeria’s run to the final after producing two penalty saves during the semi-final shootout victory over South Africa.
Two years later, he again showed his penalty-saving ability at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Nwabali stopped efforts from Egypt stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush and was named Man of the Match as Nigeria secured third place.
With Nigeria set to host Madagascar in a 2027 AFCON qualifier in September, attention will eventually turn to Chelle’s choice between the goalkeepers competing for the Super Eagles shirt.
For now, however, Nwabali appears content to let his performances at Chippa United do the talking.
