Nigeria has stepped up efforts to attract Canadian investors as government officials and state governors seek fresh capital, partnerships and expertise to support economic growth.
The appeal was made at the inaugural Nigeria Diaspora Investment Economic Conference in Toronto, Canada, organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in collaboration with local and international partners.
The conference brought together Nigerian ministers, governors, lawmakers and other senior officials, who showcased investment opportunities and encouraged Canadian businesses and Nigerians in the diaspora to increase their investments in the country.
Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olajumoke Oduwole, urged potential investors to move beyond expressing interest in Nigeria and commit capital to viable opportunities.
Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo also highlighted the economic reforms of the President Bola Tinubu administration, arguing that the measures were improving Nigeria’s competitiveness and creating a more attractive environment for global investors.
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal similarly presented investment opportunities in his state, calling for stronger partnerships with Canadian businesses.
NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa said the conference was designed to deepen engagement with Nigerians abroad and strengthen their contribution to Nigeria’s economic development.
She disclosed, however, that some invited Nigerian officials, including the Plateau State governor, were unable to attend after being denied Canadian visas.
With the conference ongoing, attention is expected to focus on converting the investment discussions and proposals into concrete partnerships, capital commitments and projects capable of creating jobs and supporting sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
