Ned Nwoko Defends Anioma State Creation, Calls It A Historic Necessity

Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, has renewed his call for the creation of Anioma State, describing the proposal as a historic necessity aimed at addressing longstanding concerns over representation, identity and regional balance.

Speaking during an interview, the lawmaker said the campaign for Anioma State did not begin with him but dates back several decades. According to Nwoko, the agitation has deep historical roots and reflects the aspirations of many people in the Anioma area.

The senator argued that creating Anioma State would help address what he described as an imbalance in Nigeria’s geopolitical structure, noting that the South-East currently has fewer states than some other geopolitical zones. He also stated that the proposed state has the population, natural resources and infrastructure needed to sustain itself economically.

Nwoko further maintained that many people from the Anioma area identify with the broader Igbo cultural and historical heritage. He said the proposed state would strengthen regional integration while preserving the identity of the people.

The lawmaker also highlighted the economic potential of the proposed state, citing existing infrastructure, commercial activities and natural resources as factors that could support its development if the proposal receives constitutional approval.

The creation of a new state would require constitutional approval by the National Assembly and the support of the required number of state legislatures, in line with Nigeria’s constitutional provisions. Political observers note that the process remains subject to legislative procedures and national consensus.
