Operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) are reportedly conveying former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from Kaduna to Abuja while in their custody, a development that has raised fresh uncertainty regarding the status of his previously granted administrative bail.
The incident occurred shortly after El-Rufai appeared before the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna, where his application for bail was slated for hearing. However, the proceedings did not go on as planned, as the prosecution informed the court that it had only just filed its counter-affidavit in response to the bail request. Consequently, the court adjourned the matter to April 1, 2026, to allow both parties adequate time to review and respond to the new filing.
Following the adjournment, events took an unexpected turn when El-Rufai was taken into custody by security operatives. Notably, neither his legal representatives nor family members who were present at the court premises were informed of his immediate destination or the reasons behind the sudden action. This lack of communication has further fueled speculation and concern among observers and supporters.
Prior to this development, El-Rufai had been granted administrative bail last Friday on compassionate grounds after the passing of his mother. Sources indicate that the bail was approved for a period of 14 days, allowing him temporary freedom to attend to family obligations. During this time, he traveled to Abuja, where he hosted the fidau prayers held in honor of his late mother. After the religious observance, he returned to Kaduna to continue attending to his legal matters, including the court appearances scheduled for the week.
The decision by authorities to return him to custody before the expiration of the reported bail period has led to widespread speculation that the terms of his administrative bail may have been altered or revoked. However, as of now, there has been no official clarification from the relevant agencies regarding the precise status of the bail or the reasons for his continued detention.
Earlier in the day, El-Rufai had also appeared before the Kaduna State High Court in connection with a separate matter. Proceedings in that case were unable to progress due to the absence of a co-defendant, which necessitated an adjournment. The court subsequently fixed April 10, 2026, as the new date for the hearing.
Taken together, these developments highlight the complex legal situation currently surrounding the former governor, as well as the procedural uncertainties that have emerged in the handling of his cases. Observers continue to monitor the situation closely, particularly in light of the unanswered questions surrounding his bail status and the actions of the involved security agencies.
