The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared that it will strongly oppose any attempt to make President Bola Ahmed Tinubu the only presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.
The opposition party warned that such a development would undermine democracy and weaken Nigeria’s multiparty political system.
Speaking on the unfolding political situation ahead of the next election cycle, ADC leaders said Nigeria must remain committed to democratic principles that guarantee open political competition. According to the party, any plan aimed at ensuring that President Tinubu emerges as the sole candidate would amount to suppressing the voice of opposition parties and limiting the rights of Nigerians to choose among different candidates.
ADC officials stressed that democracy thrives when there are multiple options on the ballot and when political parties are allowed to freely present candidates without intimidation or manipulation. They noted that Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999 has been built on pluralism and political competition, adding that any attempt to undermine that system would set a dangerous precedent.
The party also cautioned that political dominance by one party or individual could weaken democratic institutions and erode public confidence in the electoral process. According to ADC leaders, Nigeria must avoid situations where the political space becomes restricted or where opposition voices are silenced.
ADC said it is prepared to mobilize political stakeholders and democratic forces across the country to resist any move that threatens fair political participation. The party maintained that Nigerians deserve credible elections where voters can freely choose their leaders from a range of candidates representing different parties and ideas.
The party also emphasized that the 2027 election should focus on issues affecting citizens, including economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and governance reforms. ADC leaders argued that political discussions should center on policies and solutions rather than attempts to control the electoral field.
In addition, the party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other democratic institutions to remain neutral and ensure that the electoral process is transparent and fair to all political actors. ADC said the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy depends largely on how well institutions protect the rights of all parties to compete freely.
Meanwhile, political observers say the 2027 election is already shaping up to be highly competitive as opposition groups continue to explore alliances and coalitions aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Some prominent politicians have also reportedly aligned with the ADC platform in an effort to build a broader opposition front ahead of the polls.
ADC reaffirmed that it will continue to work with other democratic stakeholders to ensure that Nigeria’s political system remains open, inclusive, and competitive.
The party concluded that the strength of any democracy lies in its ability to accommodate diverse political views and allow the electorate to decide who governs them through credible elections.
