Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has revealed why the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) adopted Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Kwankwaso said the decision followed extensive consultations and meetings involving party leaders from across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Speaking during an interview on Global Television on Thursday, the former governor explained that the party agreed to zone its presidential ticket to the South before eventually settling on Obi after assessing potential candidates across the southern region.

According to him, the NDC leadership considered aspirants from all three southern geopolitical zones and concluded that the former Anambra State governor emerged as the most suitable candidate.

“When we joined the NDC, we brought together leaders from the six geopolitical zones for wide consultations. After reviewing the political situation in the country, the party decided to zone the presidential ticket to the South,” Kwankwaso said.

“We carefully assessed candidates across the South  not just the Southeast  and after thorough consideration, we concluded that Peter Obi was the best candidate for the position.”

Kwankwaso also affirmed that he still believes Obi is a stronger presidential candidate than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Asked whether he considers Obi a better option than Tinubu, whom he described as his friend, Kwankwaso replied: “Yes, that was our assessment at the time, and I still believe so.”
