Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s reported backing for Peter Obi is creating fresh challenges for efforts by opposition groups to present a single presidential candidate against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election.
The push for a common opposition candidate has gained momentum as several political parties and groups explore ways to avoid splitting opposition votes. However, disagreements over who should emerge as the consensus candidate remain a major obstacle.
Obasanjo has previously expressed support for Obi’s presidential ambition. His backing has therefore become an important factor in the ongoing discussions, particularly as opposition stakeholders consider the ambitions of prominent figures including Obi, Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Reports indicate that some members of the opposition coalition believe Obasanjo’s preference for Obi could make it more difficult to reach an agreement acceptable to all major contenders.
The challenge is further complicated by the fact that different opposition camps have their own political calculations and support bases. While some stakeholders favour Obi, others believe Atiku or another candidate could provide a stronger platform for defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The debate comes after renewed efforts by opposition parties to negotiate a single candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Six opposition parties recently participated in discussions aimed at developing a common platform, although major presidential contenders Atiku and Obi were absent from the meeting.
Despite the disagreements, supporters of opposition unity argue that a single candidate could prevent votes from being divided among several opposition parties.
The situation has also generated discussion about the proposed structure of any potential alliance, including how candidates would be selected and what political arrangements would follow if a consensus candidate emerges.
For now, no final agreement has been reached on a single opposition presidential candidate.
As consultations continue, the influence of prominent political figures such as Obasanjo is expected to remain significant. His reported support for Obi could shape negotiations, particularly if opposition leaders attempt to persuade different presidential contenders to step aside for a consensus candidate.
The coming months are therefore expected to be crucial for the opposition as political parties seek to resolve differences and determine whether they can present a united challenge to the APC in 2027.
