The Director-General of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Campaign Council, Ibrahim Abdulkarim, has urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his presidential ambition and support Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election.
Abdulkarim said opposition leaders needed to unite under a common political platform to strengthen their chances of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, he pointed to the alliance between Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as an example of the cooperation he believes the opposition needs.
He argued that the proposed coalition did not necessarily have to operate under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting that the NDC could also serve as a platform for opposition parties to unite.
According to him, Kwankwaso had already set aside his personal presidential ambition to work with Obi, and other opposition figures, including Atiku, should follow a similar path.
Abdulkarim said Atiku and other political leaders were welcome to join the alliance, adding that their participation could help expand its national reach.
He also dismissed concerns about the NDC’s campaign structures, arguing that the party should not be compared with the Obidient movement and other support groups backing Obi.
He maintained that the party had more than 1,000 support groups working to advance its political objectives.
On concerns about electoral credibility, Abdulkarim encouraged Nigerians who feared their votes might not count to support the NDC. He claimed the party had developed measures to protect votes during the 2027 elections.
The campaign director-general further assured that the party would conduct peaceful campaigns across the country and reach communities where voters had become discouraged by the electoral process.
Meanwhile, the NDC has appointed former House of Representatives member Ifeanyi Ibezi as its campaign coordinator in Anambra State.
Ibezi, an ally of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and a former prominent figure in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), recently defected to the NDC.
Following his appointment, he called on party members and supporters to intensify mobilisation efforts across Anambra, stressing that the campaign must extend beyond the state’s traditional political strongholds.
He said the party planned to reach all 21 local government areas, 326 wards and 5,720 polling units in the state.
Ibezi added that the campaign would focus on engaging undecided voters, reaching out to people who felt neglected and encouraging those who had lost confidence in elections to participate in the democratic process.
He stressed that the party’s objective was to mobilise voters and ensure that every valid vote counted in the 2027 general election.
