Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has disclosed that a new Awujale of Ijebuland is expected to be installed before May 29, 2027, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to complete the selection process.
The governor made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Media Adviser, Kayode Akinmade, in which he addressed concerns surrounding the vacant traditional stool.
According to Naija News, Abiodun gave the assurance during a stakeholders’ meeting involving representatives of different groups from Ogun East Senatorial District in Ijebu-Ode.
At the gathering, the governor pledged that the process of selecting the next Awujale would be conducted peacefully and without unnecessary complications, while ensuring that the eventual choice receives broad acceptance.
He appealed to residents of Ijebuland to exercise patience and avoid actions that could create tension as the relevant procedures continue.
Abiodun acknowledged the significance of the Awujale institution to the history, customs and collective identity of the Ijebu people, stressing that his administration recognises the importance of filling the vacant stool through an orderly process.
He said, “I acknowledge the importance of the Awujale institution to the cultural heritage, identity and unity of Ijebuland, our people should remain calm and patient as the necessary processes are being concluded.”
The governor further explained that the state government was paying close attention to the matter to ensure that the selection and installation of the next traditional ruler are completed peacefully and attract the confidence and backing of the people.
He maintained that consultations and other necessary arrangements must be handled carefully to preserve unity among the various interests involved in the process.
Beyond the issue of the traditional institution, Abiodun used the stakeholders’ meeting to discuss his administration’s activities and development plans across Ogun State.
He explained that the gathering was designed to improve communication with community representatives, listen to issues affecting residents and provide updates on projects executed by his government over the past seven years.
Among the initiatives highlighted were oil exploration activities around Eba Island and plans for the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
Abiodun described the projects as important opportunities for expanding the state’s economy, attracting investors and creating employment opportunities for residents.
He also identified the proposed Blue Marine Special Economic Zone as a potential centre for maritime commerce, industrial production and logistics operations, noting that the initiative could strengthen Ogun State’s position as an investment destination.
The governor reiterated his commitment to expanding infrastructure, encouraging private-sector participation and creating an environment that supports economic growth.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for supporting major projects and development initiatives in the state.
Abiodun called on residents and community leaders to continue working with his administration to sustain peace, promote cooperation and advance development across Ogun State.
Naija News reports that the Awujale throne became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona at the age of 91. The late monarch ruled Ijebuland for 65 years, making his reign one of the longest in the history of traditional institutions in Nigeria.
The anticipated appointment of his successor remains an important issue for the Ijebu community, given the institution’s historical, cultural and traditional significance.
