The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged newly elected Area Council Chairmen across Nigeria to play an active role in delivering President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasising that local government leaders are critical to ensuring that federal reforms reach grassroots communities. Party leaders say effective implementation at the council level will be essential to translating national policies into positive outcomes for citizens.
The call was made on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, during a meeting of APC stakeholders and elected chairmen in Abuja. At the event, members reiterated that the Renewed Hope Agenda a broad policy framework focused on economic recovery, infrastructure expansion, social investment and improved public services depends on strong cooperation between federal, state and local governments.
In his remarks, a senior APC official said that Area Council chairmen, as the closest elected representatives to the people, must prioritise projects and programmes that align with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s objectives. He urged them to drive community engagement, effective service delivery and inclusive development, noting that citizens will judge governance based on tangible results at the local level.
“The chairmen must be at the forefront of turning policy into practice,” the official said. “The Renewed Hope Agenda cannot succeed if its implementation does not reach every community through effective local leadership.” He added that the councils’ roles in coordinating local infrastructure, sanitation, education support and youth empowerment initiatives are vital components of national development.
APC leaders also stressed that chairmen should ensure sound financial management, transparency and accountability in the use of local government resources, saying that responsible governance would reinforce citizens’ confidence in democratic processes. Party officials argued that the Renewed Hope Agenda’s success hinges on performance and results, especially in ways that improve daily life for ordinary Nigerians.
During the meeting, chairmen shared experiences from their councils, highlighting areas where alignment with federal policies has already yielded progress. Some noted improvements in local infrastructure maintenance, waste management, community health outreach and partnerships with private and non-governmental organisations that amplify development impact.
The renewed emphasis on coordination also reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen intergovernmental collaboration across Nigeria’s federal system. APC strategists say that effective implementation of national objectives requires synergy among federal ministries, state governments and local councils, particularly in a period of economic reform and social transition.
Political observers say the APC’s message follows the conclusion of recent Area Council elections in parts of the country, where the party secured a number of local government seats. With newly elected chairmen now in place, the APC appears focused on consolidating political gains and translating electoral promises into substantive governance outcomes.
Analysts note that the Renewed Hope Agenda first articulated after President Tinubu assumed office includes key pillars such as economic revitalisation, security strengthening, industrial growth and social welfare expansion. How these broad policy goals translate into improved living conditions at the community level will be central to public assessments of government performance as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
By encouraging council chairmen to champion federal priorities, the APC aims to foster unity of purpose among its elected officials and ensure that local governance contributes meaningfully to national development. Observers add that effective leadership at the grassroots will also help build wider political support and demonstrate the party’s commitment to inclusive progress.
The directive reflects a broader political calculus, with the party seeking to embed its agenda at all tiers of governance and ensure that public resources and programmes are coordinated to deliver measurable benefits. For citizens, the success of these efforts will be judged on improvements in infrastructure, basic services, economic opportunities and overall quality of life in their communities.
