“I Was a Target” — Defence Minister Musa on Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, retired General Christopher Musa, has disclosed that he was identified as one of the individuals to be taken into custody by military officers accused of attempting to seize power from President Bola Tinubu, revealing that the plan included killing him if he resisted.

The revelation was made on Sunday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, coming shortly after the Armed Forces announced plans to prosecute 16 officers arrested in October 2025 in connection with an alleged coup attempt.

Musa, who previously served as Chief of Defence Staff, said intelligence later showed that his name was included on the list of intended targets drawn up by the suspects.

He said, “I was also a target. I was supposed to be arrested, and if I refused, I was supposed to be shot.

“But that’s the job. And anybody who goes into coup, I mean, zeroes his mind because you know, you succeed good, you don’t succeed, whatever consequences come, you’re ready for it. But again, I think these guys were just a bunch of very unserious individuals that really don’t know.

“If you look at the calibre of the individuals, if you look at, I don’t know what’s got into their heads to think that they could take on the armed forces like that. What I even said was even Nigerians will have fought them. Even without the armed forces, Nigerians would have stood against them. Remember, Nigerians have fought against the military rule for quite some time.”

Back in October, the military had initially announced the detention of 16 officers, describing their actions as misconduct and violations of military discipline.

Further investigations, however, later linked some of those detained to an alleged scheme aimed at unlawfully removing the elected government—conduct the authorities said breached the moral and professional standards of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Providing an update, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, explained that officers with sufficient evidence against them would be tried before a military judicial body in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other relevant service regulations.

He noted that the exercise is meant to enforce discipline within the military while upholding fairness, accountability, and due legal procedure.
