Kidnapped Nigerian Priest Father Bobbo Paschal Released After Two Months

A Catholic priest abducted in Kaduna State two months ago, Father Bobbo Paschal, has been released from captivity, bringing relief to his family, parishioners and the wider Christian community in northern Nigeria. The Archdiocese of Kaduna confirmed his release on January 17, 2026, after he was held by kidnappers for more than 60 days following his seizure from the St. Stephen’s Parish Church residence in Kushe Gudgu, Kagarko Local Government Area.

Father Paschal’s abduction occurred in the early hours of November 17, 2025, when armed men raided the parish house and forcefully took him hostage. The attack also resulted in the death of a parishioner’s brother, underscoring the grave dangers faced by clergy and civilians amid Nigeria’s persistent insecurity.

In a statement released by the Chancellor of the Kaduna Archdiocese, Reverend Father Christian Okewu Emmanuel, the church expressed profound gratitude to the nation’s security agencies, community leaders and “people of goodwill” whose prayers, support and solidarity contributed to Father Paschal’s safe release. The Archdiocese extended special thanks to law enforcement for their “tireless efforts” throughout the difficult period.

Archbishop Matthew Man‑Oso Ndagoso of Kaduna also conveyed thanksgiving, urging Nigerians to remain steadfast in faith and to continue praying for others still held by kidnappers across the country. His remarks reflected both relief and concern, as many Nigerian communities continue to grapple with abductions linked to armed groups and criminal gangs operating in rural and semi‑urban areas.

The circumstances surrounding Father Paschal’s release — including whether ransom was paid or security forces conducted an operation — have not been made public. Nigerian authorities typically do not disclose details of negotiations or operations in kidnapping cases, citing operational security and ongoing efforts to curb similar crimes.

Father Paschal’s release comes amid a broader national backdrop of insecurity, where kidnappings for ransom and bandit attacks have become tragically frequent in parts of the North‑Central and North‑West regions. Clergy, students and ordinary citizens have all been targeted in recent years, prompting calls from religious leaders and civil society for stronger protective measures.

The Catholic Church’s response to Father Paschal’s ordeal highlights the ongoing threat that kidnapping poses to Nigerians and the emotional toll on families and communities. Church leaders reiterated their appeal for greater government action to protect lives and to dismantle the networks behind such violent crimes.

As Father Paschal reunites with his loved ones and prepares to return to pastoral duties, his release is being welcomed as a moment of hope amid Nigeria’s deeply entrenched security challenges.
