President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima and other top government officials joined military leadership, veterans, families of fallen heroes and Nigerians from all walks of life to commemorate Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja on Thursday.
The annual observance — held at the National Cenotaph, Eagle Square — paid tribute to members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice defending the nation’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens. The solemn ceremony was marked by military parades, the laying of wreaths, silent prayers and patriotic songs that honoured the courage and self-less service of Nigeria’s servicemen and women.
President Tinubu, who was the special guest of honour, emphasised the importance of remembering those who lost their lives in the line of duty. In his remarks, he said the nation owes an eternal debt of gratitude to soldiers who confronted violent extremism, banditry, insurgency and other security challenges with unwavering resolve. He pledged that the government would continue efforts to strengthen the nation’s defence capabilities while supporting the families of fallen peacekeepers.
“We gather today to honour the memory of our brave soldiers — the guardians of our peace and unity,” Tinubu said. “Their sacrifices remain etched in our hearts, and their legacy must inspire us as we work to build a safer, more prosperous Nigeria for all.”
Vice President Shettima described the service men and women who gave their lives for Nigeria as exemplars of patriotism and courage. He called on citizens to reflect on the values that drove their sacrifice, including duty, integrity and love for country. According to Shettima, the nation’s heroes set a standard of commitment that should guide all Nigerians in their daily lives.
High-ranking military officers, including service chiefs, took part in the wreath-laying ceremony, placing floral tributes at the cenotaph to symbolise the nation’s respect for the fallen. Representatives of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other security agencies stood in honour guards, demonstrating unity across the defence establishment.
Among the attendees were families of deceased soldiers, whose presence underscored the personal cost of defending the nation. Many relatives received special recognition during the event, and some laid personal memorabilia at the memorial site, honouring their loved ones’ memories.
The ceremony also featured a moment of silence observed by all present, commemorating those who perished in past conflicts and internal security operations. The crowd observed a respectful pause, reflecting on the profound loss endured by the nation and the bravery displayed by Nigeria’s military heroes.
Veterans’ associations, civic groups and youth organisations also participated in the event, carrying banners and uniforms that celebrated Nigeria’s military history and service traditions. Their participation highlighted the broad societal appreciation for the armed forces and the shared commitment to national unity.
As the programme concluded, President Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of serving personnel and their families. He pledged enhanced support for military pensions, healthcare and housing initiatives, as well as continued investment in defence infrastructure.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day observance served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s servicemen and women throughout history. It reinforced a collective commitment — from the presidency to everyday citizens — to honour and preserve the memory of those who gave their lives in service to the nation.
