ADC presidential candidate Peter Obi has spoken against the arrest of students who were taken into custody after raising concerns about their safety in schools.
In a statement shared on Tuesday, Obi said students should not be punished for expressing fear or asking questions about their security. He explained that raising concerns about safety is a legitimate action and should be addressed through discussion rather than force.
Obi noted that the government and security agencies have a responsibility to protect students and ensure that schools remain safe learning environments. He added that arresting students does not resolve underlying security problems and may create fear and anxiety among young people.
He emphasized that schools are meant to be places where students feel free to learn, grow, and express themselves without intimidation. According to him, when students are silenced for speaking up, it discourages open communication and weakens trust between authorities and students.
Obi called on school authorities and security agencies to exercise restraint and engage students through dialogue when concerns arise. He encouraged the government to carefully consider the issues raised by students and respond in a responsible and practical manner.
He further appealed for concrete steps to improve safety in schools and surrounding communities. His remarks have drawn public attention, highlighting the importance of protecting students, respecting their right to speak, and creating an environment where education can thrive without fear or disruption.
