PDP Confirms Consultations to Court Atiku, Peter Obi Ahead Elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reportedly begun consultations aimed at engaging prominent political figures, including former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, as part of early strategising ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sources within the party confirmed that discussions are ongoing to explore potential collaborations and broaden the party’s appeal to a wider electorate.

According to insiders, the PDP leadership is reaching out to influential opposition figures to assess possibilities for alliances, endorsements, or cooperative arrangements that could strengthen the party’s chances in key states. The initiative is said to be part of a broader plan to consolidate support and present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

A source familiar with the discussions explained that the consultations are still in preliminary stages, and no formal agreements have been reached. “The party is exploring options and engaging in dialogue with leaders who share its vision for Nigeria,” the source said. “These conversations are ongoing and aimed at building consensus and strategic partnerships.”

The PDP is reportedly keen on leveraging the popularity and followership of both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to enhance its visibility and strengthen voter mobilisation across different regions. Party strategists believe that involving respected national figures could boost the party’s prospects and help shape a competitive electoral strategy.

Political analysts note that such consultations reflect the PDP’s awareness of the importance of strategic alliances in Nigeria’s multiparty democracy. They observe that early engagement with influential leaders can help the party manage internal competition, unify supporters, and counterbalance the entrenched power of the APC.

While the PDP has not made any public announcements regarding formal collaborations, insiders stress that the process is part of standard political manoeuvring. The party is reportedly weighing various scenarios, including possible joint endorsements, policy alignment, and shared campaign platforms, to maximise electoral appeal.

Observers say the outreach underscores the evolving nature of political negotiations in Nigeria, where parties often seek to broaden their base by engaging influential personalities who command national attention. Such alliances, they add, can influence voter perceptions, increase legitimacy, and enhance electoral competitiveness.

The PDP’s efforts to court Atiku and Obi come at a time when opposition parties are realigning and preparing for the 2027 elections. Analysts expect more consultations and strategic moves as parties seek to position themselves effectively in the lead-up to the polls.

As the PDP continues its engagement, all eyes remain on how these consultations will shape the party’s strategy, candidate selection, and alliances, potentially affecting the broader opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
