The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Obedient Movement have dismissed criticism by former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, over the proposed Peter Obi-Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections, insisting that the alliance remains a strong political force.
The reactions followed Ganduje’s recent remarks that the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket would fail to gain acceptance in Kano State and lacked the political strength needed to defeat the ruling APC in the next presidential election. He also questioned the governance records of both politicians, arguing that they do not possess the political legacy required to secure victory in 2027.
Responding to the comments, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, described Ganduje’s remarks as politically motivated and lacking substance. He said the former Kano State governor was not in a position to determine the electoral prospects of the proposed ticket, adding that Nigerians would decide its fate through the ballot box.
According to Abdulsalam, the popularity of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, coupled with the prevailing socio-economic challenges facing the country, could strengthen public support for the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections. He expressed confidence that the party would continue to gain momentum as political activities intensify across the country.
Also reacting, the National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, defended Obi’s record in public office, saying the former Anambra State governor left behind a reputation for prudent financial management and accountability. He argued that political opponents should focus on issue-based campaigns rather than personal attacks.
Tanko maintained that Obi’s political profile and leadership style have continued to resonate with many Nigerians seeking reforms in governance. He added that attempts to undermine the proposed alliance through criticism would not diminish the support it enjoys among party members and supporters nationwide.
Political analysts say the exchange reflects the growing political contest ahead of the 2027 general elections, as parties and their supporters intensify efforts to shape public opinion. They noted that disagreements over candidates and political alliances are expected to become more frequent as campaigns draw closer.
Observers also believe that Kano State will remain a strategic battleground in the next presidential election because of its large voting population and political influence. As a result, major parties are expected to devote significant attention to strengthening their presence in the state.
Meanwhile, stakeholders have continued to urge political parties to conduct issue-based campaigns focused on governance, economic recovery, security and national development rather than engaging in personal attacks. They argue that constructive political debates will enable voters to make informed decisions during the election.
As preparations for the 2027 polls continue, the NDC and the Obedient Movement have reaffirmed their confidence in the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, insisting that its electoral success will ultimately be determined by Nigerians at the ballot box. They maintained that the coming election should centre on policies, leadership capacity and the aspirations of the electorate rather than political rhetoric.
