Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, positioning himself as a key figure in Nigeria’s evolving opposition politics.
Baba-Ahmed made the declaration in Abuja during a gathering of party leaders and supporters at the Labour Party’s national secretariat. The announcement has drawn renewed attention to the LP’s future direction, especially following recent political realignments and the exit of some prominent figures from the party.
Addressing party faithful, Baba-Ahmed stated that his decision to seek the presidency was neither sudden nor influenced by recent developments within the opposition space. He explained that his ambition to lead Nigeria predates the 2023 election and is driven by a long-standing desire to contribute to national development through purposeful and accountable leadership.
The former senator emphasized that his presidential bid is anchored on the belief that Nigeria needs visionary leadership capable of addressing economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges. According to him, the country’s current realities demand leaders who are prepared to make difficult but necessary decisions in the interest of the people.
Baba-Ahmed also dismissed suggestions that his ambition is tied to the political moves of other leaders. He stressed that his decision to run is based on personal conviction and constitutional rights, noting that every qualified Nigerian has the right to aspire to the highest office regardless of ethnic or religious background.
“I have made myself available to contest the presidency in 2027 because I believe Nigeria deserves better leadership,” he said, adding that his aspiration is rooted in service, not rivalry. He urged Nigerians to focus on competence, integrity, and ideas rather than identity politics.
Reacting to the declaration, the Labour Party leadership welcomed Baba-Ahmed’s decision, describing it as a boost to the party’s strength and continuity. The party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, praised the former vice-presidential candidate for remaining committed to the LP despite recent political shifts, insisting that the party remains united and focused.
Abure noted that Baba-Ahmed’s declaration reflects the Labour Party’s resolve to remain a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political space. He assured supporters that the party’s structure remains intact nationwide and that preparations for future elections are already underway.
Political analysts say Baba-Ahmed’s early declaration could shape internal party discussions and influence the broader opposition landscape ahead of 2027. They note that his experience, visibility from the 2023 elections, and continued engagement in national discourse may help him build momentum if he successfully mobilises party members and the wider electorate.
As political activities gradually intensify across the country, Baba-Ahmed’s entry into the 2027 race adds to a growing list of aspirants expected to seek Nigeria’s top office. Observers believe that the coming months will test the Labour Party’s cohesion and capacity to project a strong presidential candidate capable of competing on the national stage.
With his declaration, Baba-Ahmed has signalled his readiness to play a leading role in Nigeria’s next political chapter, as voters and parties alike begin to assess the choices ahead of the 2027 general election.
